The powerful symbolism of boats has stayed with me for decades. I began making both kinetic opaque paper boats and small, hand-held ceramic boats nearly twenty years ago. I am captivated by the weight these small journey boats carry—like talismans of sorts. I intentionally made them at this scale so they could be held and contemplated. They are quiet, meditative sketches with no oars and no sails; they glide through life with purpose and strength. Each boat is unique, just as each person finds a different way to move forward. I have made nearly one thousand boats so far, and they can be found in private collections worldwide.
